Lord Shiva in Murudeshwara

Murudeshwara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, lies in the holy beach town in the Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka, India. Situated between the Honnavar and Bhatkal town ( about 12 kms) The statue of Shiva here is the world’s tallest (as claimed) and it lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea.

मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर के बाहर बनी शिव भगवान की मूर्ति विश्व की दूसरी सबसे ऊँची शिव मूर्ति है और इसकी ऊँचाई १२३ फीट है। अरब सागर में बहुत दूर से इसे देखा जा सकता है। इसे बनाने में दो साल लगे थे और शिवमोग्गा के काशीनाथ और अन्य मूर्तिकारों ने इसे बनाया था। इसका निर्माण उसी स्थानीय श्री आर एन शेट्टी ने करवाया और लगभग ५ करोड़ भारतीय रुपयों की लागत आई थी। मूर्ति को इस तरह बनवाया गया है कि सूरज की किरणे इस पर पड़ती रहें और यह चमकती रहे।

कन्दुका पहाड़ी पर ,तीन ओर से पानी से घिरा यह मुरुदेश्वर मंदिर भगवान शिव को समर्पित है। यहाँ भगवान शिव का आत्म लिंग स्थापित है, जिस की कथा रामायण काल से है।अमरता पाने हेतु रावण जब शिव जी को प्रसन्न करके उनका आत्मलिंग अपने साथ लंका ले जा रहा था।तब रास्ते में इस स्थान पर आत्मलिंग धरती पर रख दिए जाने के कारण स्थापित हो गया था।गुस्से में रावण ने इसे नष्ट करने का प्रयास किया उस प्रक्रिया में , जिस वस्त्र से आत्म लिंग ढका हुआ था वह म्रिदेश्वर जिसे अब मुरुदेश्वर कहते हैं में जा गिरा। इस की पूरी कथा शिव पुराण में मिलती है। राजा गोपुरा या राज गोपुरम विश्व में सब से ऊँचा गोपुरा माना जाता है। यह २४९ फीट ऊँचा है। इसे एक स्थानीय व्यवसायी ने बनवाया था। द्वार पर दोनों तरफ सजीव हाथी के बराबर ऊँची हाथी की मूर्तियाँ देखी जा सकती हैं।

How to reach: From Bangalore take the NH-206 to reach Honnavar and then take NH-17 to reach Murudeshwara. From Mumbai and Mangalore one has to take the National Highway NH-17 between the towns of Honnavar and Bhatkal.

Nearest Road : From Bangalore 455 km, from Mangalore 165kms.

Nearest Railway Station : Murudeshwara station lies on the Konkan Railway. Some trains from Mumbai and Mangalore stop here. To reach from Bangalore on has to take train to Bhatkal station.
Nearest Airport : Mangalore International Airport, 165 km away. Hubli and Panaji airports are other alternatives.

Shiv Lingam , Shivling -शिवलिङ्ग (शिवलिंग)

The Sanskrit term लिङ्गं liṅgaṃ, transliterated as linga, has diverse meanings and uses, ranging from mark, sign or characteristic to gender. Vaman Shivram Apte's Sanskrit dictionary provides the many definitions:

SHIVLING -शिवलिङ्ग (शिवलिंग)

The Shiva Linga is a symbol of Lord Shiva.
Mysterious power or indescribable Sakti in the Linga.
Linga is symbolical of the generative power of the Lord Shiva.

The lingam (also, linga, ling, Shiva linga, Shiv ling, Sanskrit लिङ्गं, liṅgaṃ, meaning "mark", "sign", or "inference is a representation of the Hindu deity Shiva used for worship in temples. In traditional Indian society, the linga is rather seen as a symbol of the energy and potential of God, Shiva himself.

The lingam is often represented alongside the yoni, a symbol of the goddess or of Shakti, female creative energy.The union of lingam and yoni represents the "indivisible two-in-oneness of male and female, the passive space and active time from which all life originates".

Shivling -Shiva Linga is the holy symbol of Lord Shiva that is considered sacred by the devotees of Lord Shiva.

भगवान शिव पृथ्वी पर अपने निराकार-साकार रूप में निवास कर रहे हैं। भगवान शिव सर्वव्यापक एवं सर्वशक्तिमान हैं। महाशिवरात्रि पर्व भगवान शिवशंकर के प्रदोष तांडव नृत्य का महापर्व है। शिव प्रलय के पालनहार हैं और प्रलय के गर्भ में ही प्राणी का अंतिम कल्याण सन्निहित है। शिव शब्द का अर्थ है 'कल्याण' और 'रा' दानार्थक धातु से रात्रि शब्द बना है,तात्पर्य यह कि जो सुख प्रदान करती है,वह रात्रि है।
